What is DHC Continus?

DHC Continus contains dihydrocodeine, which is a painkiller belonging to the medicine group known as opioid analgesics. It is not as potent as morphine but is more potent than codeine.

Dihydrocodeine works in the brain where it attaches to opioid receptors. By reducing the anxiety pain causes, this has the effect of reducing your awareness of the pain and of improving your way of dealing with the pain.

How to use DHC Continus

DHC Continus is available in tablet form. You will be instructed by your doctor about how many tablets to take and how long to taken them. The tablets are taken every 12 hours. Generally, adults and children over 12 years of age start on 60–120 mg every 12 hours. The dose may be lower if you are elderly. Your doctor can adjust your dose if you still experience pain. DHC Continus tablets must be swallowed whole with plenty of water because then they will be absorbed slowly by your body and work over 12-hours; if you break, crush or chew the tablet, then they may be absorbed too quickly and result in serious side effects and overdose. Drinking alcohol while on treatment can make you drowsy. DHC Continus should not be stopped suddenly unless otherwise advised by your doctor. Speak to your doctor about how to stop your tablets, which is usually by a gradual dose reduction to avoid side effects.

In cases of potential overdose or taking more of this medicine than prescribed, contact a doctor immediately. If you miss a dose accidently, you may take your medicine up to 4 hours after the correct medication time; then continue as planned. After 4 hours, miss this dose and do not take double the dose at the next planned time.

Who can use DHC Continus?

DHC Continus can be used by adults and children over 12 years of age. It should not be used by children of 12 years and younger. If you have an allergy to dihydrocodeine or the other tablet ingredients do not take this medicine. Avoid DHC Continus if you are pregnant and, before accepting this medication, discuss any possibility of pregnancy and breastfeeding with you doctor. Other indications that this medicine is not suitable for you include problems with breathing, an asthma attack, a poor functioning small bowel (paralytic ileus), head injury, raised skull pressure, alcoholism, and galactose (sugar) intolerance. Caution is advised with DHC Continus if you have a history of drug addiction, asthma, pancreatic inflammation, constipation, an obstructive bowel disorder, severe heart enlargement due to lung disease (severe cor pulmonale), or problems with your kidneys, liver, gall bladder or prostate.

DHC Continus can change the effect of other medicines and vice versa, so mention all medications that you are taking/have recently taken, which were obtained from a doctor or from another source. Specifically, state those medicines known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (e.g., phenelzine, moclobemide, and linezolid), or used to induce sleep or to treat mental disorders.

Your ability to operate machines or drive could be impaired while taking DHC Continus because it can make you sleepy. It is important to know that it is an offence to drive while taking DHC Continus if you are affected by this medication and you have neither followed the instructions given by the doctor nor in the patient leaflet.

DHC Continus side effects

With long-term use, you can become addicted or tolerant to DHC Continus (i.e., you need a higher dose or to take it more frequently to achieve pain relief), or get side effects on treatment discontinuation (i.e., withdrawal syndrome). If taken for headaches, long-term use can worsen your condition. An allergic reaction to DHC Continus may be indicated by swelling of the face/throat, breathing problems, and skin itching; in these circumstances get medical assistance immediately.

Common side effects include nausea and vomiting, constipation, stomach ache, and drowsiness. Less common effects comprise respiratory depression, paralytic ileus, mood fluctuations, hearing/seeing imaginary things, confusion, seizures, blurred vision, dizziness, low blood pressure, problems urinating, reduced sex drive, abnormal liver function tests, and skin flushing and rash.
