What is NSU?
NSU is a general inflammation of the urethra: the tube that carries urine from the bladder. Because there are a variety of different causes for the inflammation, it is known as Non-Specific Urethritis.

Can I get Tested for NSU?
Tests are now available using PCR technology that searches for the DNA of Mycoplasma Genitalium and Ureaplasma Urealyticum (two of the major causes of NSU), so we are able to identify which of these two bacteria (if either of them) is causing the problem and treat the infection accordingly.
As well as bacterium, NSU can be caused by excessive friction during masturbation or sex, an allergic reaction to soap or detergent, or drinking too much alcohol. These causes would not be identified in a laboratory test.
What are the symptoms of NSU?
Symptoms of NSU vary but include:
- Pain or burning when urinating
- White or cloudy discharge from the tip of the penis/vagina
- Needing to urinate more frequently
What are Mycoplasma and Ureaplasama?
Mycoplasma Genitalium and Ureaplasma Urealyticum are tiny organisms that can live inside your body and generally won't cause symptoms. Sometimes however, especially if you are stressed or ill, they can multiply at a rapid pace, leading to an inflammation of the urethra, also known as Non-Specific Urethritis (NSU.)
How can you catch Mycoplasma or Ureaplasma?
The Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma bacteria are believed to be present in over 50% of sexually active individuals and can be transmitted via sexual contact.
You cannot pick up these bacteria from kissing, hugging, sharing towels or sharing toilet seats.
How can I be tested and treated for Mycoplasma Genitalium and Ureaplasma Urealyticum?
If you are experiencing symptoms of an infection (especially if you have been tested and do not have Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea) then you can be tested for these bacteria by visiting a sexual health specialist. Testing is usually done via a urine sample or swab test. Testing for these two bacteria is not available on the NHS. We recommend The STI Clinic for sexual health screens. The STI Clinic can do individual or joint tests for Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma. They also offer a full sexual health screen, which includes a search for these bacteria. Antibiotics are free if you test positive for anything.
Is NSU Treatable?
The bacteria that cause NSU can be killed off with a short course of antibiotics. If you have been told by a medical professional that you are likely to have NSU but you do not have access to treatment, The Online Clinic can prescribe an appropriate antibiotic.
